Overview

Ghostreader is the cheeky name for the AI feature in Readwise Reader that uses OpenAI’s large language models (LLMs) to enhance your reading experience. In the parlance of LLMs, a prompt is a set of written instructions you provide as input to an LLM and a response is the LLM’s output.

Ghostreader comes with a few default prompts we’ve crafted that enable you to perform actions such as summarizing the document, defining a word, simplifying a paragraph, and many more. But Reader also provides you the flexibility to change these default prompts to whatever you wish.

Fully taking advantage of this customizability, however, requires you to learn some basic variables for writing prompts that take advantage of your document’s text and metadata. For example, if you want Ghostreader to use your highlights to re-write a summary after you’ve read a document, you need to learn how to write a prompt with a variable for your highlights. This guide will show you the basics of how to customize your prompts.

Ghostreader Scopes

Ghostreader has different sets of prompts for different scopes. Scope here refers to (a) how much of the original document content is included as context in the Ghostreader prompt and (b) where the Ghostreader response is outputted.
